Considerations
When determining gas requirements, the following points need to be considered:
Unflued gas appliance installation
- Unflued heaters are not permitted for use in bedrooms, other sleeping areas and bathrooms.
- Bayonet points for portable heaters cannot be installed in bedrooms, other sleeping areas and bathrooms, or within 1.5m of a door to a bedroom or bathroom.
- Minimum room size requirements limit the permissible size of an unflued heater for a given space. Refer to appliance specifications for individual restrictions.
- Remember that internal gas piping must be run from the gas meter to the appliance.
- Infra-red heaters have a minimum required clearance off the ground and from ceilings. This varies depending on the heater’s output. Refer to the specific appliance specifications for details.
- Some gas appliances with will require a power source.
Flued gas appliance installation
- Check that appliance flue termination positions are permissible to flue through external walls or through the roof. Refer to Ventilation and flueing for more information.
- Flued appliances must be installed in compliance with the New Zealand Gas Appliance Regulations and the gas appliance manufacturer’s specifications.
- Always check the clearances required for appliances from combustible materials.
- Some flued gas appliances will require a power source.
- Remember that internal gas piping must be run from the gas meter to the appliance.
Central and underfloor heating appliance installation
- Obtain technical assistance in the plan of these systems to ensure the system is designed to maximise effectiveness and meet user needs.
- These systems need to be planned well in advance of construction as they may need to be partially installed prior to any concrete bases being laid.
- Refer to Ventilation and flueing for minimum clearances required for central heating units from other flue terminals, appliances and gas and electrical meters.
Appliance energy requirements
- Most gas appliances require an electrical supply for ignition, thermostats and fan operation. Ensure an adequate supply adjacent to the appliance is provided.
- Gas appliances will operate only on the specific gas they were designed for - either natural gas or LPG - as the regulators and burners within the appliances are designed for a specific fuel.
