Steps to a gas connection
1. Find out if gas is available to the property
To connect to the Vector gas network a property must front or be in close proximity to a Vector gas main. Vector has mains throughout most areas of Auckland and throughout many towns and cities in the North Island.
For specific information, call 0508 42 75 48 in the Auckland area and 0800 22 22 60 for the rest of the North Island. Some Channel Partners also have access to Vector mapping databases and can quickly and easily establish whether gas is available at a particular location.
In some situations, especially where there will be considerable use of gas, Vector will extend the network to service a new connection. This is considered where, for instance:
- a subdivision is being developed
- commercial premises are being built
- several buildings such as townhouses are being developed.
2. Select appliances
A comprehensive range of gas appliances is available and it is recommended these are purchased from a Channel Partner. Channel Partners are accredited gas specialists.
3. Site visit (if applicable)
A Channel Partner or Vector contractor may visit the property to take measurements and produce a site sketch.
Gas connection costs can vary from property to property, depending on the type of gas appliances selected and the site conditions. For instance, more favourable consideration may be given to connection costs charged to the customer where the access is easy and the connection is for hot water, central heating and pool heating rather than where it is for cooking only.
4. Choose the energy retailer
Customers have the choice of energy retailer and the Channel Partner can provide information about all the retailers available in the area. Details are also available on our website – www.ongas.co.nz.
Please note:
Some energy retailers have minimum gas load requirements when connecting new customers.
5. Connection to the Vector gas network
Vector will arrange to have the gas service laid from the main in the street to the gas meter on the property.
Factors that must be taken into consideration include:
Right-of-way and cross-lease properties
Consents will be required from all interested parties for right-of-ways and cross-lease properties.
Weather
Heavy rain can make on-site soil conditions hard to work with and can slow up the connection process
Specific council requirements
These may include additional consents or approvals to manage traffic; to allow for proximity to sewer, storm water or mains water supply; or if trees will be affected.
Other utility company requirements
If bulk utility services are nearby, the utility company may place special conditions on the job to avoid damage to their services.
6. Installation of appliances
The Channel Partner will arrange a certified gasfitter to install all the gas appliances, pipes, bayonets and connection points required. The gasfitter will run pipes from the meter to the various appliance points around the property and will install the appliances.
7. Turning on the gas supply
A gasfitter will turn on the gas, and then ensure that the installation is completely safe and legally compliant with all gas standards and codes (see Regulations, codes and standards for more information). The property owner will receive a copy of the gasfitter’s certification and another copy will be sent directly to the energy retailer to confirm the gas is on.
