Introduction

The gas industry is governed by legislation and it is imperative that companies involved in the distribution and supply of gas, and the manufacture and installation of appliances, comply with the requirements set out in this legislation.
Although architects are not bound by the legislation, it is important to be aware that other people in the building process must be legally compliant with these requirements. For example, when designing buildings consideration must be given to the legislation binding gasfitters for installing appliances. Space allowances should be made accordingly.
It is also important to understand that anyone who installs gas appliances is legally responsible for the safety of all the appliances and fittings installed, and must take all steps to obtain the necessary information (tests, certificates) to ensure the appliances meet the legal requirements in New Zealand and are safe.
Please note:
This brief outline of the relevant legislation is not a complete and final list. You should obtain legal advice if uncertain of any matter regarding the regulation of the gas industry.
